Numerical optimization of a grating coupler for the efficient excitation of surface plasmons at an Ag-SiO2 interface

چکیده
The efficient generation of surface plasmons from free space optical waves is still an open problem in the field. Here we present a methodology and optimized design for a grating coupler. The photoexcitation of surface plasmons at an Ag-SiO2 interface is numerically demonstrated to yield greater than 50% coupling from a Gaussian beam into surface plasmon voltages and currents.

Excitation of surface plasmons at a SiO2/Ag interface by silicon quantum dots: Experiment and theory
The excitation of surface plasmons SPs by optically excited silicon quantum dots QDs located near a Ag interface is studied both experimentally and theoretically for different QD-interface separations. The Si QDs are formed in the near-surface region of an SiO2 substrate by Si ion implantation and thermal annealing. Photoluminescence decay-rate distributions, as derived from an inverse Laplace ...
متن کاملDislocated double-layer metal gratings: an efficient unidirectional coupler.
We propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally a dislocated double-layer metal grating structure, which operates as a unidirectional coupler capable of launching surface plasmon polaritons in a desired direction under normal illumination. The structure consists of a slanted dielectric grating sandwiched between two gold gratings. The upper gold grating has a nonzero lateral relative di...
متن کاملEfficient Analysis of Plasmonic circuits using Differential Global Surface Impedance (DGSI) Model
Differential global surface impedance (DGSI) model, a rigorous approach, has been applied to the analysis of three dimensional plasmonic circuits. This model gives a global relation between the tangential electric field and the equivalent surface electric current on the boundary of an object. This approach helps one bring the unknowns to the boundary surface of an object and so avoid volumetric...
متن کاملOptimization of finite diffraction gratings for the excitation of surface plasmons
The excitation of a surface plasmon polariton SPP wave on a metal-air interface by a diffraction grating under monochromatic normal illumination is investigated numerically. The influence of the different experimental parameters grating thickness, period, and duty cycle is discussed in detail for a semi-infinite metal and a thin film. Both engraved grooves and deposited protrusions gratings are...
متن کاملTheory and simulation of surface plasmon excitation using resonant metal nanoparticle arrays
We discuss a plasmonic coupling device consisting of a periodic array of ellipsoidal silver nanoparticles embedded in SiO2 and placed near a silver surface. By tuning the shape of the particles in the array, the nanoparticle plasmon resonance is tuned. The resulting resonantly enhanced fields near the nanoparticles, in turn, excite surface plasmons on the metal film. We have performed finite in...
